Autumn Art Competition – Winners Announced!

Congratulations to all our winners of the Autumn Art competition inspired by the school garden. There was an overwhelming number of entries to the competition for which children had the challenge of representing ‘autumn’ through the eyes of the school garden.

The entries will be exhibited in the school gallery until the end of term.

The winners were selected for their imaginative use of natural materials to represent the different light of Autumn, for their fine art skills and for their creativity. The winning entries includes a book all about Autumn, A huge mixed media collage and lots of fine art skills. Congratulations to all of you!

Autumn Art Competition

Miss. Henderson has received some fantastic entries for the Holiday Autumn Art Competition…but there is still room in the gallery for more! We have had drawings, paintings, collage, photographs and even an Autumn Art Book, so if you have an idea for an entry you still have a few days left to finish it off.

The winner will be announced next week!

Plague Artists at the Gallery

On Wednesday, five artists from years 3 and 4 went to visit the Dulwich Picture Gallery to take part in a curious and wonderful art workshop.

The children looked at paintings, by renowned artist Van Dyck (1599-1641) who worked in Italy during the time of the plague, for some inspiration. Children carefully crafted plague masks which doctors wore during the plague. They made plague masks , decorated these with different colours and placed different scents into the beak (people used to believe that good smells would keep them healthy and protect them from getting the plague). The children explored a variety of different scents from various items such as lemongrass, orange, ginger, cloves and what their health benefits would be.

Once children had made their masks they went on a tour of the Picture Gallery wearing them!

Art at Charles Dickens Primary School – how to get involved!

Did you get to see the Art Club exhibition in ‘The Artful Dodger Gallery’ last term? There is  still time to pop along with your children after school and see what Art Club have been creating with their teacher Miss Wittering . Thank you to any parents who have given up their time to  share their talents with the children – they really appreciated it and you have given the school lots of ideas to use in the future.

If you enjoy art ( painting, printing, textiles, pottery, sculpture etc) and you could spare time to lead a session after school or get involved in some family art activities this term, please speak to Mrs Buchanan( deputy head) or Michelle Avison ( parent governor and Morgan’s mum).

The Big Draw

Today saw our first Big Draw – an open drawing and mark making celebration for all our pupils and their families.
A dull November afternoon in the playground was soon flooded with the colours of autumn – fireworks, pumpkins, squashes, apples, dark skies and bright lights were drawn all over the playground and walls by everyone from tiny children to unsuspecting grandparents – a wonderful happy experience and a realisation we are blessed with so many talented creative families who lead these events. Thank you to you all.
