I like to ride my bicycle, I like to ride my bike…

Our Year 5 and 6 cyclists are continuing with their training to be road safe. They’ve been focussing on balancing correctly whilst signalling, getting in to the correct lane when approaching junctions and wearing safety equipment to be seen and protect themselves. Maybe we will see one of them wearing a yellow jersey in the future?

Cycling Proficiency

Today saw the first sessions for 30 cyclists in Years 5 and 6. They inspected their bikes with professionals, tested their skills in the playground and talked about safe cycling – including helmets and high visibility which they will wear when not on the playground. Over the four day course they will build up to go out on the streets and will culminate in being safe to cycle the streets of Southwark.

At Charles Dickens we support children (and adults) cycling to school and there are pods in both playgrounds to lock bikes up during the day.

Cricket in Dulwich Park

Well done to our team of cricketers who competed at the Southwark Tournament held in glorious weather at Dulwich Park. The children played three games, winning their first two handsomely and then losing their third match by a few runs to the eventual tournament winners. There were individual moments (well done to the ‘Player of Tournament’ – 3 sixes at any level is a great achievement) of brilliance as well as a great team ethos.

Tag Rugby League

Congratulations to all our tag-rugby players who have been scoring tries, holding the line and tagging away every Thursday after school over the last term and a half. Having come second in the league we went through to Southwark knock out stages. Progressing through the quarter finals we made it to the semis where we lost by one try to the ultimate winners. Overall we came fourth in the whole of Southwark and we are proud of being told by one referee that our “supporting play is the best he has seen” and that our captain was nominated ‘Boy of the League’ for sportsmanship and inspiring others. Well done all of you!

Year 3/4 Gymnasts balance to first place.

Congratulations to our Year 3 and 4 gymnasts who have followed in the footsteps of Years 5 and 6 by coming first in their Southwark Gymnastics competition. They came first equal with another school and the judges were particularly impressed with the neatness of our finishes to the routines. A big thank you to Mrs Worley, the gymnastics coaches and parents for supporting the school with our gymnastics teaching and well done again to our athletes!

London Games…here we come!

On St George’s Day it was the team wearing red and white who strode to victory in the Southwark Gymnastics Tournament. Dressed in their new kit, our Year 5/6 gymnasts balanced, cartwheeled, tucked, straddled and arabesqued to pole position. For winning the tournament they will also go to the London Games – held at the purpose built complex at Crystal Palace – to represent Southwark against athletes from all over London.

Sporting Certificates – Athletics and Tag Rugby

Well done to all the children who have represented Charles Dickens at Southwark Tournaments over the past few weeks. The photos  show our brilliant Athletes who came 4th in a Southwark wide competition – the girls doing particularly strongly. We also have two tag rugby teams who have been fine tuning their skills before the league starts and a special well done to three children chosen by their peers as ‘Players of the Day’.

Balance, tuck, straddle…gymnastics galore!

From Reception up to Year 6 our children enjoy gymnastics. By the time they leave Charles Dickens children have opportunities to gain British Gymnastics awards, attend after school clubs with external coaches and compete against other schools in Southwark.
