Science Week!

The children at Charles Dickens enjoy an engaging and exciting science curriculum throughout the year, so it came as no surprise that they were looking forward to science week. Our science leader Ms Fareeda introduced the week with a home learning competition based upon the theme of a ‘science journey’. The children were also treated to a science assembly by the ‘Science Boffins’, exploring chemical reactions, air displacement, absorption and materials. A big thank you to Ms Fareeda for organising it all so effectively.

Year 1 visit the RAF Museum

Year 1 have been enjoying learning about the history of aviation this year and completed their module with a trip to the RAF Museum in Colindale, North London. The children explored different types of aircraft, the materials they are made from, and how they fly! Both classes represented their school admirably with superb manners, travelling safely and sensibly on the London Underground. A big thank you to all the parents and carers who gave up their time to volunteer to help on the trip.

Stars of the Week!

Congratulations to our wonderful stars of the week! These are the children who impressed their teachers with their thoughtful writing, their mastery of Maths, or their general dedication to learning. A huge well done to them and our friends of the week too, who showed particular kindness at lunchtime. What will you do to be a star of the week next time around?

World Book Day!

This week at Charles Dickens we celebrated world book day in style, with a fun-packed day of art, singing, writing and above all reading! Children and teachers came to school dressed as their favourite book characters and the costumes were a joy to behold. The children took part in workshops with renowned children’s author Anna Wilson, as well as teaming up with older and younger children to share their reading during the ever popular ‘big book, little book’. A big thank you to parents and carers for helping children with their wonderful costumes and a huge well done to Miss Jacobs who organised the whole day so successfully.

The Science of Materials with Mark Miodownik!

Materials scientist Mark Miodownik entertained and educated the whole of Key Stage 1 this week with an assembly about the properties of different materials. Mark showed us how a banana can be frozen in liquid nitrogen and then used as a hammer! How liquids can be controlled by magnets, and how some metals are so hard that even driving a steam roller over them won’t make a scratch. The children were enthralled by the presentation and left inspired to learn more. A massive thank you to Mark for giving up his time to share his knowledge and love of science.
