Another busy week in year five!
In English, we have been learning about Nelson Mandela and his long walk to freedom. The children watched a documentary about the great man’s life and learnt lots about his struggles for equality. Notes were taken, themes were discussed and time lines were studied. All great.
The children spent 80% of this week’s Maths lessons learning about percentages. We spotted the similarities to fractions and were able to convert decimals and fractions to percentages. Andrew, Josiah and Nina have been particularly brilliant at doing this.
The most exciting part of this week has been we have started rehearsals for our show! We started by reading through the script and moved on to the tough audition process. The children all have scripts and everyone has a speaking part. Learn those lines!

The first week back after half term has buzzed by in a blitz of learning – in maths the children have been tackling co-ordinates with great panache. In Fezzwig, Delina, Jake, Henry and Mona to name but a few have really found their feet with translating and reflecting shapes. Caspar has, as so often the case, proved an excellent source of expertise on the topic too. Over in Barnaby, Chloe S and Asiya tackled coordinates this week with patience and precision. Well done!
In Science in Fezziwig the children had a long and heated debate about evolution – it’s a massive concept to get your head around. Minds were blown. While in Barnaby, Rashaan and Jorge thoroughly enjoyed learning about the classification of species and contributed with enthusiasm to the creation of a classification branch key.
In English, the children have been immersed in the dark world of Dostoevsky’s classic story: Crime and Punishment. They have been inhabiting the mind of the murderous Rodion Raskolnikov as he goes about his plan to liberate himself from the tyranny of poverty for good. The children have been writing dramatic sentences with colons and semicolons, well done to Thurston and Riyadh who thought carefully about the language they were using. And well done to so many children in Fezzwig Class for their incredible use of language to convey Rodion’s anguish. Special mentions to Shekinah who showed deep intuition about the character’s feelings and to David who wrote at length in a diary form.
Insider reporters Rajvir and Amr from Summerson class will now deliver exclusive Summerson news:
‘Tristan, Amira and Chloe brilliantly wrote structured sentences for their diary entries based on the novel Crime and punishment. Elhadj and Josiah displayed a fantastic performance in Boxing, learning a new move called the “check hook”. In Music, Takara and Joseph shone when playing the electric guitar to the song “Yellow hearts”.’
Finally, across the whole of Year 6, we welcomed Neal Harrington from News International into school on Thursday. As a follow up to the farm trips, News International have produced a brilliant Farm News magazine full of the children’s farm stories. Not only that the publisher Harper Collins has donated a book to every child in Year 6. Children will be bringing these home this week – be sure to take a peek.
Year Five News
Fri 06 March 2020
Another busy week has come and gone in year five.
In English, the children have begun to write a biography of Nelson Mandela. The children learnt about the features of biographies before moving onto writing their own of the great man.
Angles have been studied in this maths lessons. Protractors have been used, angles measured and missing angles calculated. How many degrees are in a right angle? How many degrees are in a full circle? Ask the top mathematicians of year five!
The highlight of the week was definitely Thursday’s world book day celebration. Year five were treated to a workshop from our visiting author, Elka Evlands. The children found out what it takes to be an author and asked some really excellent questions. It was also great to see so many children get into the spirit of world book day by dressing up as their favourite book character.

Year 6 have carried on ploughing through graphs this week in Maths. Anethea and Chloe in Summerson were the dream pair, whilst Adam shared his outstanding reasoning with Rajvir, Amr and Wilma. In Fezziwig, Delina, Jake, Henry and Ajahni proved highly able with a line graph. In fact, everyone worked really hard to nail pie charts and line graphs, using rulers with acute precision. Over in English, we’ve witnessed the tragic murders of the pawnbroker and Lizaveta in Crime and Punishment. Everybody was eager to read further in the book to discover what was happening next, the suspense being too much to bear. Mr Smith even claims that he caught some children in Fezziwig class, trying to sneakily read the book at playtime. As a result, their writing is a pleasure to read: fantastic choice of vocabulary, interesting adjectives and beautiful grammatical structures. In Gymnastics, Lenny insisted that the children were very precise with each of their movements, and Takara in Summerson blew us all away with her back flips. What a star!
The highlight of the week was, of course, World Book Day – there were some amazing costumes. Wiktor was a steam punk marvel, Ajahni made an incredibly convincing gangsta granny, Thurston a brilliant Varjak Paw and Matilda made a marvellous Morrigan Crow, to name but a few.

Year 5 have had another busy week!
It’s clear that are many budding scientists in the year group. The children have really relished all the exciting opportunities to demonstrate their talents as part of science week. The level of enthusiasm and quality of projects for the science fair has been very strong this year. We were very proud!
We took part in an exciting science workshop where we had the opportunity to show off our space facts from last term. Oh and we thoroughly enjoyed making rockets blast off in the courtyard!
In English, having gathered lots of information on Nelson Mandela, the children have worked extremely hard to put the facts down on paper with some fantastic sentence work. Well done Horacy, Amira, Amine and Andrew who shared some superb examples with the class. Now everyone is all set for writing a brilliant biography next week.
Rehearsals for the show are heating up with some fantastic dragon acting from Kayeden, Naimah and Michal and some promising performances all round. The children had their first look at the soundtrack this week and impressed us all with their musical capabilities. It’s really starting to sound great. Monte, Spike and Santi you blew us all away with your professional approach to learning the music. Well done!

Science week has been explosive – well done to everyone who made a science project. In the classroom , children learnt all about the five kingdoms of living things and were astounded to learn that fungus can inhabit your feet. In English, the children have been writing in role as Petrovich, the wily detective in Crime and Punishment. Asiya, Wiktor and Eliana have written excellent sentences in role as a suspicious police officer investigating a double murder! Dylan Sekyi came up with some great metaphors and was eager to up-level his vocabulary using a thesaurus, keep this up! In Fezziwig, there were some wonderful metaphors for Rodion’s state of mind form Matilda, Paul, Ajahni and Mona.
Well done to everyone in Year 6 for remaining positive in their assessments too – there have been maths and reading papers to sit and it has been hard going. Well done all.
The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the science workshop.
Children in Summerson reported: “We had an incredible time at the Science workshop, making mini rockets, learning about how the Moon orbits the Earth and how big and old the star Betelgeuse is. For our mini rockets, we were first given a small plastic container with a lid, then Oli-the-scientist filled them in with a small amount of water, and finally we put half a fizzy vitamin tablet in. As quick as the speed of sound, we then closed our containers, turned them around before placing them on the floor and moving backwards. Then… suspense. Tick, tock, tick, tock went the seconds. Without warning, the capsules exploded before our eyes, making us scream and jump in surprise. We learnt that the tablets produced a gas that expanded into the container and had to escape, creating a big bang! Did you know that if the Earth was the size of a ping pong ball, it would fit in Betelgeuse three trillion times? Ardell’s favourite fact is that Betelgeuse is 475 light years away. In a rocket, there is over 100 G force and the children could experience what G force felt like on different parts of their bodies: hair cut were ruined, jumpers were pumped up and lips were stretched. An experience we will never forget!” Ms Rhys-Evans was very impressed with the question children were asking – high level questioning with with great emphasis on details.”
