We are back after a well-deserved break and straight back into the thick of the action! The children are refreshed, relaxed and ready to learn and it really shows. Everyone has worked so incredibly hard this week, despite some particularly challenging lessons.
In English, we are right at the end of our work on The Explorer, planning and writing our own missing chapter. The children have absorbed incredible language skills over the past few weeks and it has been so rewarding to see them used in this final piece of writing. Personification, adverbs, detailed descriptions of body language and so very much more have been used to great effect, allowing everyone to write a story rich in detailed descriptions and filled with action. Every single young writer has exceeded all expectations, writing by far their best piece of fiction yet.
Our Maths has stepped up in challenge, and every Year 4 has stepped up with it as you can see from the accompanying photo of Fred, Habiba and others working hard. We have continued with our fraction work, moving on to addition and subtraction. The problems the children have been faced with are complex and challenging, but also fun and rewarding. What has been particularly great to see is the amount of different methods children are capable of using to solve fraction calculations, which shows a really high level of fluency. Lana and Alex did a wonderful job explaining their methods to the class.
Geography sees us continue to learn about Brazil and – a little bonus for our regular readers – here’s a clue as to what’s coming next: we will be using this knowledge of Brazil for our next English unit, writing a persuasive letter to a certain someone. Who could it be? What could it be about?
Thanks also to all the parents who attended parents’ evening, it was such a pleasure to have the opportunity to share so many wonderful things about all the children. It really does help us teachers put into perspective quite how well everyone is doing too. If you didn’t make it, please just contact the office and we will gladly meet with you whenever works for you.
Finally, another reminder that our children are very lucky to have access to the wonderful Times Table Rockstars app and website. Although not specifically part of the homework, it is an incredibly useful tool for times table practice and we recommend squeezing in a few minutes of it here and there. We will redistribute login details very soon.
Thanks again for all your support!

We are excited to tell you that Year 3 have started another Shakespeare play! This spring, it’s all about A Midsummer Night’s Dream. For the next six weeks, the children will be participating in drama and storytelling at the start of the week and then doing writing inspired by what they’ve learnt. On Monday, we entered the court of Duke Theseus of Athens, a formal and hierarchical place. Here we met Egeus who, ‘full of vexation’, has come to complain to the Duke that his daughter, Hermia, won’t marry Demetrius. It turns out that Hermia actually loves Lysander and wishes to run away with him. Just to complicate matters (Shakespeare did love a complication!), Hermia’s best friend, Helena, is in love with Demetrius! We came up with actions for each of the characters – ask your child to show you – and created a lovely map to show how all the characters relate to each other. The plot may be more complicated than Eastenders but this was no problem for the children of Year 3 who could explain all the complexities with ease!
In Maths, we have been looking at the twelve-hour clock, so AM and PM, and ‘minutes past’ and ‘minutes to’. ‘Minutes to’ is a particularly tricky concept so anything you can do at home to help with this is will make a big difference. In Geography, we’ve been learning about the different cities in Italy. We’ve all decided that a field trip to eat pasta and gelato should be on the cards! In Science, we have completed our unit on light and are moving onto forces.
Don’t forget that it’s World Book Day next Thursday, 5th March. We’d love to see your child dressed as their favourite book character but home clothes are also welcome! If you have any old costumes you’d like to donate to the school, please do bring them in. Thank you in advance!

Where better to begin that our World Book Day celebrations this week! As you can see from the accompanying photos, the costumes were simply amazing. The best we’ve ever seen in my opinion! We also had a special visit from an author who did a workshop in each Year 4 class, during which the children did such a lovely job expressing their love of reading. We also wrote book reviews of our favourite books to put up on display in the classrooms. Finally, we joined the reception classes for some paired reading and the Year 4 children were just so lovely when working with the younger ones. We had such a wonderful day and are already looking forward to next year!
Did anyone guess what our new writing topic is from the clues in last week’s newsletter? What we have started doing is practising persuasive writing so we can convince those responsible to save our rainforests, not continue with deforestation. We want to give a balanced argument, so we have begun by looking at some of the reasons why rainforests are cut down before studying the many reasons we should do everything we can to save them. April and Lazlo did a great job in coming up with arguments for and against deforestation.
Our Maths learning has moved on from fractions and on to time, where we have been practising converting from minutes to seconds and back again, as well as converting from 12-hour to 24-hour clocks. It’s been fabulous to see how many children have remembered their learning from last year and worked hard to get even better. Joshua and Elise have done some particularly great time conversions, some as tricky as converting 150 minutes into seconds!
Well done everyone on such a fantastic week and make sure you all have a relaxing weekend!

Fri 06 March 2020
What a week it’s been! Yesterday was Ms Jacobs’ favourite day of the year – World Book Day! The children of Year 3 had the best costumes yet and showed so much enthusiasm for all the reading activities. The assembly was a real highlight. They heard from Elka Evalds, author of ‘Granny Magic’, who spoke about the joys of writing and making sure you follow your dreams. Then we had the ‘Dress the Teacher’ competition where the children had to guess which book characters the different teachers were as they put on items of clothing. The hall erupted into screams when worms were found in Mr Twit’s (Ms Fraser’s) pockets! Ms Worley made a superb Hagrid, sporting crazy hair, a dark coat, a big beard and a pink umbrella! On Monday, Nickleby Class also met the Children’s Laureate (Cressida Cowell, ‘How to Train your Dragon’) and the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street on Monday. There are loads of photos on the school Instagram – do take a look!
When we’ve not been revelling in the joys of books and reading, we have been having a brilliant time in the enchanted forest of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. In our drama session, we created the forest using our ‘magic canvas’. The children showed incredible creativity in creating the magical flora and fauna, particularly Nyakeh and Elsie. We then learnt about the quarrel between Oberon and Titania. Each of them had a gang of fairies on their side and the children had huge fun chorusing lines from the play and showing their antipathy to the other side with their body language. It was quite something to see!
In Maths, we have been working out how to tell how many hours, minutes and seconds have passed. The children have been tackling this with characteristic determination. They can now also tell you the correct time in at least two different ways – test them at home! In Geography, we have been looking at different Italian cities and how they differ from each other and London. In Science, the children have been experimenting with which materials are magnetic. It is not all metals! Ask the children which ones are.

We have had another brilliant, fun-filled, learning-packed week! There’s no better place to begin than Science Week, and a very special thank you to all the Year 4 children who produced such incredible projects for the exhibition. We have never seen such a wonderful collection of artistic, scientific exhibits. Everyone who contributed (too many to list here!) should be so proud of all their hard work and scientific ingenuity.
We also had an inspiring and exciting workshop all about space. The children learned about how the moon orbits the sun via an experiment using a skateboard and rope. They also did an experiment themselves, using a fizzy vitamin tablet placed in a canister, which was then filled with water and the lid attached. The fizz caused the canister to fill with gas which eventually caused it to fly up into the air. This is a demonstration of thrust, the force used to leave the earth’s atmosphere. Finally, some children got to experience g-force, the force astronauts feel as they speed towards space. Make sure you check out the photos of these fun, action-packed and often-hilarious activities.
In non-science related business, we have begun planning our persuasive letters designed to protest against the deforestation occurring in the world’s rainforests, particularly Brazil. Veronica and Zacharie have designed exceptional plans filled with strong arguments to help them write their letters. We have also practised a variety of persuasive sentences including emotive language to appeal to the heart of the reader. Everyone’s sentences were exceptional, but the quality and quantity of Farida and Perez’s work deserves a mention.
This term really is flying by, and every day we are all so impressed with how far the children have already come. It really does make all of everyone’s hard work worthwhile and we all definitely deserve a rest this weekend!

What a magnificently scientific week it’s been! First, congratulations to all the children who submitted projects to the Science Week competition! They were of an amazingly high standard – creative, interesting and packed with scientific thinking and facts. The teachers agree that it was very difficult to judge, and we look forward to hearing the results next week. On Monday, we were treated to a fantastic assembly about plastic by Mark Miodownik and Ruby Wright (Lazlo and Ida’s parents). They explained the life-cycle of plastic, using gasp-inducing practical experiments, including using a hairdryer to separate plastics and a black light to sort different materials. The main message was how important it is to recycle plastics, something that the children are very good at doing at school. Mark and Ruby’s beautifully illustrated booklet is on display in both Nickleby and Oliver Classes for the children to enjoy.
On Tuesday, the children participated in a brilliant space workshop where they were made to ‘orbit’ like the moon, made rockets, and experienced G-force! The children were fantastically engaged, sharing impressive facts about space, and screaming with delight when their rockets ascended into the sky. There’s no question that Year 3 love Science! And, as if that wasn’t enough, they also had their regular Science lesson in class too. Our focus on magnets continued with the children having loads of fun investigating which coins are magnetic. Interestingly, coppers made before 1992 are not magnetic because they were made of bronze, whereas ones made more recently are magnetic because they are made from copper-coated steel. The children were amazed when they saw coins from the 70s, which made Ms Worley feel very old!
It was also assessment week this week, which meant that the children got to show off how much progress they’ve made since last term. The children have been brilliant at calmly doing their assessments – well done Year 3! That doesn’t mean that other learning has stopped however! We have continued with our Maths unit on time, working out how much time has passed in hours, minutes and seconds. In English, we have met the ‘mechanical’ characters – a group of tradesmen who have met in the enchanted forest to rehearse ‘Pyramus and Thisbee’ for the Duke’s wedding. The children found it hilarious that this ‘am dram’ group isn’t actually very good and had a riot putting on their own hammed up versions of the play. In Geography, we have been developing our compass skills, with reference to the English counties and Italian regions. The children have become very proficient at identifying North, South, East and West – well done!
