Year Three and Four Notice Board

News, diary dates, letters home and home-learning for Year Three and Four.

Year Three News

Fri 18 October 2019

The children of Year 3 have been having lots of fun writing their own versions of ‘The Iron Man Part II’. Their teachers have been amazed with the levels of creativity and imagination that the children have shown. Ideas have ranged from the Iron Man leaving the scrapyard to search for his missing ear, to escaping to find an iron friend. Well done to all the children for their fantastic engagement with the story and their brilliant ideas!

In Maths, we have come to the end of our unit on addition and subtraction. The children have been tackling tricky word problems using bar modelling. They have shown excellent reasoning in solving these problems. After half term, we will be moving onto multiplication and division. The best way to support your child with this is to help them practice their times tables at home, using Times Tables Rockstars or another method if you prefer.

In History, we have been learning all about the impact that Roman design and engineering has had on the modern world including the building of towns and roads, and the invention of toilets and central heating! The children were particularly fascinated by Roman toilets – ask them what facts they’ve learnt… Andrew from Oliver Class and Oscar from Nickleby Class have really impressed their teachers with their Roman knowledge.

In Science, the children have been learning about fossilisation and how this only takes place in sedimentary rocks as the heat from the lava that creates igneous rocks and changes the structure of metamorphic rocks would be too high for fossils to survive. In Gymnastics, the children have successfully completed the BAGA level 8 proficiency test and are already working towards level 7. They have mastered shapes such as pike and straddle and worked on their core strength, which has helped them with their front and back support and bunny jumps. Well done!

Just a reminder that Maths (www.mymaths.co.uk) and Spelling (www.spellzone.com) homework are online. Thank you to everyone who supported their children with completing this last week. It seems that most of the issues with homework are being ironed out but please do continue to alert teachers if there is a problem.

Year Four News

Fri 01 November 2019

Our first week back after half term! This year is flying by, and all these wonderful Year Four children seem to be growing up so fast! We have dived straight into the action, picking up where we left off in our learning. In Maths, we continue to race through our learning, focussing on some tricky but very useful strategies to help with mental subtraction. How could you solve 2001 – 889 in your head? There are so many possibilities… Farida and Joel were particularly efficient with their problem solving.

In English, we are beginning a new unit based on the book Norman the Norman from Normandy. We will be writing comic stories, using this hilarious book as an inspiration. We even did some drama and hot seating to retell the story to each other. Ellie and Romey were absolutely fantastic, really getting themselves into role and helping us to remember all the amusing events of the book.

Year Three News

Fri 01 November 2019

The children of Year 3 have stepped back in time to Ancient Rome and the world of ‘Julius Caesar’! They have been learning about the start of the Shakespeare play through drama and storytelling. The children learnt that Rome was a republic, ruled by senators. Some of the senators did not like that Caesar had returned victorious from battle, and that many citizens were calling for him to become king. The children played drama games to explore the idea of status, and the threat to the senators’ status that Caesar posed. They also interviewed the puppet Caesar and asked insightful questions about his feelings towards his military role and popularity. They also met the ‘soothsayer’ and felt worried that Caesar had ignored his warning to ‘beware the Ides of Match’. The teachers have been really impressed with the children’s grasp of these complex ideas and some of the original Shakespearean language.

In Maths, we have started our multiplication unit, focusing on the 3 and 4 times tables. Thank you to all the parents who are practising times tables at home – it makes a big difference. Well done to Jamal in Oliver and Orchid in Nickleby for excellent independent Maths work. In History, we have been looking at the artefacts discovered in a Roman grave in York (called ‘Eboracum’ in Roman times). The grave was discovered in 1901 and archeologists and scientists have found out fascinating facts about the person buried there. She was a young woman of high status, with South European and North African heritage. Ask the children what objects she was buried with and what they tell us about her. In Science, the children have been showing off their incredible rocks knowledge in their end of unit assessment.

Next week, the children will be finding out about our upcoming Year 3/4 winter show! Please save the date! Thursday 5th December – there will be a 2pm and 6pm performance. We expect all children to attend both performances.

Fri 08 November 2019

Norman the Norman from Normandy! Writing that book’s name never gets old! Our comic chapters are coming along swimmingly, with us having written the first section of our own chapter that ends, predictably, with clumsy little Norman accidentally getting revenge on one of the men who defeated his father in battle. There are some hilarious scenes in the children’s work involving all sorts of amusing characters, descriptive language and ridiculous conversations. Ellie and Will have particularly enjoyed this text type, creating some frankly bizarre hijinx for our eclectic cast of characters to endure.

In Maths, we are on good old times tables, starting this week with 6, 7 and 9. This is probably a good opportunity to remind you that you can practice them on Times Table Rockstars as well as MyMaths. All children have been reminded of their logins to both of these websites since half term. We have played some fun times table games, including trying to recite them backwards, which has been really impressive. Zacharie and Helena have done a great job this week!

In PE, we have been working on our basketball skills with Mr Hunt, working on dribbling, bouncing and shooting. The children have battled the increasing wintry weather to really improve their ball skills which has been great to see.

Have a great weekend one and all!

Year Three News

Fri 08 November 2019

The children of Year 3 and 4 have started preparations for their winter show, ‘Alice in Wonderland’. They have been learning some of the songs (original compositions by Mr Nathan!) and have been auditioning for acting parts. The children will find out which parts they have been allocated next week when proper rehearsals will begin… More information about costumes etc. will be shared with you nearer the time.

In English, we have continued with our drama exploring ‘Julius Caesar’. This week we focused on persuasion and how we can use our voices and body language to persuade someone else. Cassius has been trying to persuade Brutus to get rid of Caesar, and has been up to dastardly tricks, including forging letters from ordinary citizens calling for Caesar to be removed. The children wrote their own forged letters, using very impressive arguments and vocabulary to make their case. Leo in Nickleby and Isabel in Oliver wowed their teachers with their persuasive writing.

In Maths, we have moved on to division. The children have been revising their multiplication and division facts, using the four and eight times tables. In Science, we have started our new unit on food and our bodies, learning about the different food groups which make up our diets and what proportions of each we should be eating to keep us strong and healthy. In History, the children have been revising all the amazing inventions we can thank the Romans for – toilets, sewers, aqueducts, public baths and central heating! Next week, they are going to be making TV adverts for the invention they think is the most impressive.

Just a reminder that Maths (www.mymaths.co.uk) and Spelling (www.spellzone.com) homework are online. Thank you to everyone who supported their children with completing this last week. We know that Spellzone didn’t work last week, but it should be up and running this week.
