Hervé Tullet: A Body of Work

Contemporary artist and author Hervé Tullet loves making art fun, messy, and something everyone can do together. He’s famous for his interactive books like ‘Press Here’, but he also runs workshops that get people to create art in exciting, playful ways. Instead of focusing on making perfect drawings, Tullet’s workshops are all about having fun, using your imagination, and working as a team to create something amazing.

One of his most interactive workshops is called ‘A Body of Work’, and it’s all about using your whole body to make art! Here’s how you can do it with your friends:

1. Get a big surface: Grab a roll, large piece of paper, or even an old sheet. Spread it out on the floor or tape it to a wall.
2. Gather supplies: You’ll need markers, crayons, paint, or anything that lets you draw and colour big, bold shapes.
3. Start drawing your outlines: Stretch your arms and hands or even legs and feet out and draw around the outlines to make silhouettes. Let your drawings overlap and connect, so it becomes a giant, shared piece of art.
4. Develop the shapes: Next, you’re going to colour in only the spaces where your outlines overlap – the intersections. Colour each intersection in differently and boldly. You can add patterns on top too! Everyone can add their own colours and marks to the same surface.
5. Celebrate the mess: Don’t worry about mistakes—Tullet says there’s no such thing in this game! Everything you do adds to the energy and creativity of the group.

This activity is like a mix of art and dancing, where you get to create something beautifully unexpected together as a team. It’s not about making something perfect—it’s about having fun and letting your ideas flow!
