Year 5 Jazz Workshop Project

On Friday, Year 5 put on the most spectacular Jazz performance. It was a culmination of an intense 5 day project working with the supremely talented Pete Letanka, learning about the fundamentals of music through Jazz. The children of Year 5, in such a short period of time learnt to play instruments, read music, write and sing songs! On the day of the performance, the children performed what they had been working on accompanied by a Pete and his band! It was a great experience and well done to everyone involved!

David Bowie teaches calculation strategies

Well done to Copperfield class this week for their entertaining and instructive class assembly. Two worlds collided when the pupils shared their recent exploration into the music of David Bowie with their learning on how to calculate the answers to the addition of two digit numbers. It was made simple by some brilliant solver- recorder lead by David Bowie and the Starman.

We also loved all the musical instruments the pupils made alongside their tangible enjoyment and sense of fun!

Congratulations to our Stars and Friends of the week! Well done to Yellow Team!

This week we were again so proud to hear of all the wonderful reasons why children got star of the week, this week , including excellent progress in handwriting.  Again our friends of the week were chosen for their kindness to others on the playground and it has been wonderful to hear stories of lots of children helping each other if they have worries or concerns.  Also well done to Yellow Team who won the house point competition! Finally congratulations to our cake raffle winner who got tho take home the delicious cake this week. Thank you to Malachai and Ethan’s mum for donating the fantastic cake – it looks yummy!

During our Monday assembly slot we not only celebrated all of these achievements, but we also celebrated Chinese New Year.  Thank you so much to Mercutio and Aubrey’s mum who helped us to celebrate by telling us about her childhood in China and playing some Chinese music on the piano for us.

Year 6 Show – Daffodil Scissors

Year 6 excelled in their performance of Daffodil Scissors. Not only did they sing, dance and act but they also wrote many of the songs with our musician in residence, Pete Letanka. The children worked brilliantly as a team, supporting each other very well and allowing personalities to shine through.

A special well done to Michael, Theo, Jonatan and Ramez for their management of the stage and the lighting.

Thank you to all the parents who came along to support their child – here are the photos as promised – lots of group shots towards the end ( over 100 photos)

On Friday, 19th June, Charles Dickens Primary School’s Suzuki Method violinists performed their repertoire near the Barbican at St Giles-without-Cripplegate church. Along with students from other schools who are taught in this method, they played in two rehearsals culminating in their wonderful hour-long performance. Mrs Manning, Mr Cole and some parents of our violin students were very impressed by the children’s playing ability, sensible behaviour and the camaraderie between our students from Years 2 to 6. They were superb representatives of our school throughout the day.

Well done to all our young musicians this week who performed in the Spring Term Music Concert. Many performers have only been learning since September 2014 so it is wonderful to see their progress. It was also a joy to hear the Silver Strings Group perform Vivaldi’s ‘Spring’. All the practising and dedication is paying off!

Year Five Jazz Concert

Last night, the Year Five pupils amazed their parents with a fantastic Jazz concert – the culmination of their work with our resident musician, Pete Letanka. The children improvised, played, sang and danced their way through a number of Jazz standards and original compositions. We were very impressed by the pupils’ commitment and bravery when they volunteered to sing and dance “freestyle” – just another example of our pupils’ amazing talents! Thanks to Pete and his band for working with us – we can’t wait for next time!
