PE should be…

…active – where all children are physically taking part for as much time as possible. It should also develop skills as well as being fun. Look how much Year 2 are enjoying themselves building up their twisting and turning skills to avoid pursuers. By Year 5 they will be using these skills on the tag-rugby pitch and by their early 20s they may be using them in The Six Nations!

What do you like doing at lunchtimes?

Children have been enjoying the new lunchtime rota with one class a day using the MUGA to learn new PE skills and games. This means there is more space in the playground for other favourite activities including cricket, chase, climbing, reading, skipping and football. Thank you to all the children for making the most of this new opportunity.

The results are in and……(drum roll)….

Charles Dickens have done it again! For the second year in a row we came, we saw and we conquered. The entire Year 5/6 cohort competed at the Southwark Cross Country competition and for each school the top placed athletes scored points. These were put in to the Bacons Sports Partnership and in each category the top two schools were mentioned.

Year 6 Girls: First, Year 6 Boys: Second,  Year 5 Girls: First,  Year 5 Boys: not in top two.

All these scores were added together and the final results were:

Year 5 Cross Country Champions 2013 – Charles Dickens!

Year 6 Cross Country Champions 2013 – Charles Dickens!

Congratulations to everyone and a massive thank you to the teachers for helping devise and Cross Country Winnersimplement such a successful training plan.

On Friday, years 5 and 6 had a fantastic afternoon at the Southwark Cross Country competition, where all of our pupils completed a challenging 1.2 mile race. We were very successful, with one first and two second place medal winners, along with a number of top ten runners in each age category! Well done everyone!

All the children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 had a brilliant day of competitive sport at Bedlam (GMH) Park in the shadow (actually very little of that) of the Imperial War Museum. They coped with the heat to run, jump, throw, balance, squeeze, pass and cheer superbly showing off the skills their teachers have trained them in. Everyone was a brilliant sportsperson – cheering on their team and there were more points scored this year then ever before. In the end, there was only 19 points between first and fourth with the winning team … THE RED FALCONS … taking the silverware with 912 points! Well done everyone and thank you to Mrs Worley for organising such a brilliant day.

A scorcher of a Sports Day

Well done to all the children who threw, ran, squeezed, balanced and worked so well as teams to have a brilliant Sports Day at the Fire Brigade pitch. Thank you to all the parents for helping everyone look so colourful, to the teachers for organising the smooth transition from event to event, to the Year 6 volunteers for running the stations, to the firemen for cooling everyone down and a special thanks to Miss Worley for orgainising the whole day!

Congratulations Athletes!

No, we’re not talking about the 2012 Olympians but the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 teams who represented the school at the Southwark Athletics Festival held at Burgess Park. Not only were all pupils brilliantly well behaved and wonderful role models, but they also competed using the skills the teachers have helped them fine tune over the term. Year 3/4 competed in the morning and came…..wait for it…. FIRST! Year 5/6 competed in the afternoon and came …. drum roll here …. FIRST!
