Celebrating the 200th Birthday of Charles Dickens

As we’re sure that many of you are aware, this year sees the bicentenary of our namesake Charles Dickens’ birth!

We are planning to celebrate his birthday with a fortnight focusing on his life and work. We have planned a series of exciting special events which will be held over the two weeks before half term from 30th of January until the 10th of February.

The Foundation Stage will be exploring the Victorian era with a look at Dickens’ characters and a walk around the Victorian sites in our local area. In Years 1 and 2, the children will be exploring the story of Oliver, with a focus on character studies, story writing and performing dramas based on the story. Years 3 and 4 will be writing stories and playscripts based on the story of David Copperfield. Years 5 and 6 will be exploring the genres of biography and autobiography, based on the life of Dickens himself and the story of Great Expectations.

Most excitingly of all, our festivities will culminate in a whole school birthday party on February 7th which will include a Dickens feast and playing Victorian games. We would very much like the children to dress up as Victorians on this day (with Years 1 and 2 dressed as characters from Oliver) so start preparing your costumes now! There will be prizes for the most effort and for the most convincing costume!

We hope that you will enjoy hearing about and supporting your child’s learning over the upcoming celebrations and do keep checking the school website and class blogs for all of the latest news!
