Yesterday the children in year 5 and 6 were lucky enough to spend an afternoon in the company of Mike Webber. Mike is an archaeologist with a great knowledge and love of the Thames. The children were mesmerised as Mike explained how the Thames and our relationship with this great river has changed over the years. We learnt about flooding, reclaiming land, how the river was used for sacrifices, work, pleasure and how it has always been a treasure trove of objects, pieces of history captured and kept safe by mud and silt – now waiting to be discovered.
Mike talked about how artefacts are found and how to date and understand them using a knowledge of what people were like and how they lived during a certain period of history.
The most exciting part was when, armed with our new archaeology skills, we became ‘real’ archaeologists, sorting and organising objects into different periods in history, discussing what objects were and what they were used for.
It was a fantastic afternoon and all the children were so focused and excited. Thank you to Mike Webber for bringing Archaeology alive for us!
