Nursery News

Fri 08 November 2019

This week I will tell you a bit about our children’s physical development. Every Tuesday Trotwood children attend gym lessons with coach Lenny. They have been learning different moves that one of our children has written about since she finds the sessions so inspiring. Outside children have been playing the lava game which they invented last term. The game consists in using any available equipment to make a track to balance on to avoid the lava below. Then you have to use your core muscles to get across to the mountains safely. Tiny Tim access the gym on Thursdays for Tiny Gym which is a free-flow session focussed on developing an understanding of space, others and how to climb onto and get down from equipment. These sessions are excellent on many levels as children who find climbing challenging give it a go in a very safe environment and expert climbers have a chance to use a beam and equipment at height.

Every day we encourage the use of play-dough to ensure little fingers are also having some gym time.

Mr Yusuf has introduced the children to artist Franz West and used scrunching paper techniques to build sculptures. This week children learned how to use sellotape dispensers and find the end of the sellotape. This involved lots of critical thinking.

Group times are going very well with children counting out objects to match a numeral in fun games which many children have gone off to replicate on their own or with a group.

What’s in the bag games have focussed on children identifying the sounds at the beginning of words.
Please do continue to bring in conkers, beech nuts, interesting leaves, sticks and newspaper.

This week I will be focussing on mark making and writing.

Our youngest children have many opportunities to make marks in sand, water, foam and with paint. These early experiences allow them to experiment with marks and drawing without feeling the pressure of permanence.

Next we encourage the children to contribute to communal drawings. After reading a story in our tent this week several children were inspired to draw some weird and wonderful creatures including this unicorn.

In the mornings children collect their name and sign in. Children write marks to represent their name and eventually by the summer term in Trotwood many children write their name independently.

We draw attention to writing being useful by setting up letter writing activities, providing notebooks for orders to be taken and recipes to be written. Children often ask us about what we are writing when we write a note or an observation. By reading it back to the children they understand words can be written down and convey meaning. This has led to children asking to have their own stories written down as they dictate.

On Monday Trotwood received a parcel from Kings College, a school in India north of Delhi. In the parcel were many letters from children in Peacock and Flamingo classes. We read these in group and have begun to write some letters to our new indian friends.

If you would like to continue writing letters over the weekend do ask your key worker for a name to write to. The children told us about their recent celebrations for Diwali so it would be lovely to tell them a bit about the recent celebrations here, bonfire night and possibly about Christmas that is coming up.

In Tiny Tim the children have started to make a kindness tree and are going to add their comments of how best to support kindness towards others
Group times have been about distinguishing different sounds and building a repertoire of rhymes as well as practicing to take particular quantities from a larger group. Here you can see children setting up a bakers shop whilst counting out and arranging cakes.

The big focus this week has been on kindness. We have been discussing with the children what kindness means. In Tiny Tim we have been adding the children’s comments to the kindness tree and in Trotwood the kindness elves have been for a visit in order to explain what acts of kindness are.

There have been lots of kind acts throughout the week with children going out of their way to comfort each other when they have seen someone upset. Some children have shown an insightful understanding of the importance to divert attention to move from a sad mood to a happy or calm mood. Many children have identified that they enjoy playing together with another peer. This contributes to them feeling happy.

Children have been made aware that some children playing alone like this and to help them enjoy their time alone it is important we give them the space they need. Children are learning so much about each other this week and appreciating similarities and differences within our community. It is our aim to ensure all children in nursery develop the necessary language to describe how they feel and how they like to be treated.

As well as discussing friendship and kindness in group the children have been developing an awareness of how many objects or dots they can see without counting. Children have found this really fun as it is especially satisfying to know the number of dots on dice when playing games. These dots are in a regular arrangement the children learn to recognise. Building on that knowledge we have been developing children’s awareness of amounts of irregular arrangements.

Children have also been demonstrating great problem solving skills when trying to rebuild things that have been broken or fallen down such as their models or dens.

In forest school the children have shown an interest in continuing with planting bulbs and collecting the last of the autumn leaves. They also chose objects and plants to take back to the nature table in Trotwood. Children are demonstrating a good awareness of the changing seasons and a great respect for living things.

Trotwood children have been replying to their friends in India this week. Our children are demonstrating great early writing skills and a very strong understanding that it is lovely to send and receive letters. Hopefully this will lead to a long correspondence between our children and the children at kings college in India. There has been a strong focus on distinguishing sounds. Outside, we tested our new loudspeaker listening to the crackling of fire. Children have been keeping warm dancing and singing along to nursery rhymes again using our fantastic new speaker. The fascination with dragons continues and has led to some wonderful pictures. Often our children really enjoy drawing on huge pieces of paper which gives them the freedom to use large sweeping movements if they wish which allows for the building of essential muscles and coordination. Group times have been excellent for getting children confident with recognising numerals.

Nursery News

Fri 13 December 2019

We are so proud of all the children across both nursery classes as they have made such wonderful progress over the autumn term.

We would like to thank our wonderful parents, grand parents and carers for engaging with us so well. Our children are reaching really good levels of independence which in turn helps build their self confidence. This will feel like a very long break to all of us.

Please make sure your children have plenty of opportunity to run, climb and keep active. Please remember the British Heart Foundation recommends three hours of activity daily for children this age. The best way to ensure this is to get out to the park every day. Children who are confident physically find it much easier to hold a pen and control their marks.

Enjoy having lots of talk time. You could write down a story you make up with your child. Next term we will be focussing on tales and stories from around the world and will be encouraging the children to make up their own stories also.

May you all have a great time with friends and family over the next three weeks.
